FAQ: How do I change my address with USCIS? What is form AR-11?

Photo by Anna Land on Unsplash. If you are a foreign national in the United States, generally you must report a change of address to USCIS within 10 days of moving. This is especially important if you have a pending application. Find out how to change your address with USCIS in this FAQ.

As the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) continues moving toward the use of online accounts and online filings, confusion has arisen regarding how to notify USCIS of a change of address, particularly if the foreign national does not have an online account. Learn more in our FAQ below.

How do I notify USCIS that I have moved?

There are two ways to notify USCIS of your address change. The first is by logging onto your online account. According to USCIS, this is the best method for near real-time processing of your change of address request. The second option is by completing a paper form AR-11 and mailing it to: US Department of Homeland Security, Citizenship and Immigration Services, Attn: Change of Address, 1344 Pleasants Drive, Harrisonburg, VA 22801.

I am a domestic violence survivor, do I follow the same instructions?

No. Domestic violence survivors, crime victims, including trafficking victims and their families, must mail form AR-11 to: U.S Citizenship and Immigration Services, Attn: Humanitarian Division, Vermont Service Center, 38 River Road, Essex Junction, VT 05479-0001.

Similarly, if you are an abused spouse or have an abused child and are filing for removal of temporary conditions, Form I-751, you must mail your completed form AR-11 as follows:

Are there other special instructions?

Yes, if you are a U.S. citizen or national and have submitted an affidavit of support for another person, you must submit Form I-865, Sponsor’s Notice of Change of Address, within 30 days of your move. If you are a civil surgeon and need to update your address, please use the email address you received on your approval notification. For more information, see the USCIS Civil Surgeon page. Attorneys should go to Filing Your Form G-28 page for information on updating their address.

What else should I know?

If filing online, include all relevant receipt numbers to make sure that the change is effective across the board. A and G visa holders and visa waiver visitors are not required to notify USCIS of their address change. Make sure to sign and date your forms.
