News Alert: USCIS Extends Green Card Validity Extension to 36 Months for Renewals

Photo by AbsolutVision on Unsplash. U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) has announced a significant update to the process for renewing Green Cards. Effective Sept. 10, 2024, USCIS will automatically extend the validity of Permanent Resident Cards (Green Cards) by 36 months for lawful permanent residents who file Form I-90, Application to Replace Permanent Resident Card. This update is a response to the increasing processing times many applicants have faced, offering extended proof of lawful status.

Key Points to Know:

  • Extended Validity: If you file Form I-90 to renew an expiring or expired Green Card, the receipt notice you receive from USCIS will now provide a 36-month extension of the card’s validity. Previously, this extension was limited to 24 months.

  • Updated Receipt Notices: Beginning Sept. 10, 2024, USCIS began issuing updated receipt notices that reflect this new 36-month validity extension. These notices can be used along with your expired Green Card as evidence of your continued status and employment authorization while your renewal application is pending.

  • Pending Applications: If you have already filed Form I-90 and your application is still pending, you should receive an updated receipt notice reflecting the 36-month extension.

  • Proof of Status: If you no longer have your Green Card and need evidence of your lawful permanent resident status while awaiting your replacement, you can contact the USCIS Contact Center to schedule an appointment at a USCIS Field Office. At your appointment, you may be issued an Alien Documentation, Identification, and Telecommunications (ADIT) stamp as temporary proof of your status.

This change is expected to alleviate some of the stress associated with lengthy processing times, providing Green Card holders with extended proof of lawful permanent resident status during the renewal process.
